Superintendent's Update May 7, 2018

April 7-11, 2018 is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please take a moment to express your appreciation this week to teachers who do so much every day for our children. They inspire, connect, and motivate students in and outside classrooms every day. Additionally, National School Nurse Day, also known as School Nurse Day, is celebrated during National Nurse Week, which runs annually from May 6 to May 12. May 6 is celebrated as National Nurses Day, while May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale is celebrated worldwide as International Nurses Day. I extend my deepest appreciation to the dedicated and caring teachers and nurses of the Lunenburg Public Schools. Teacher Appreciation Week Resolution 2018.pdf School Nurse Day Resolution 2018.pdf

I begin this update asking you to keep the Parkland, Florida victims, their families, our colleagues, and that community in your thoughts and prayers. This all-too-common event in our nation requires action at every level. Police Chief Marino, Fire Chief Sullivan and I met again today to talk about safety in our schools. While we certainly will continue to review and update emergency procedures and protocols with building administrators, our most recent discussion after hearing the reports of the events in Parkland prompted us to focus additional efforts on prevention. We continue to hear that the perpetrators of these awful acts which take the lives of beloved children and others were known in the community prior to the carnage.

For years locally and nationally we have promoted, “see something – say something” and yet the tragedies continue. We must deepen this conversation to support that mantra beyond its current status. Chief Marino, Chief Sullivan, Resource Officer Zrate, and the school administration are committed to providing effective tools for reporting concerns. Until we have other reporting tools to offer, I implore you to immediately contact by phone any school office or the Lunenburg Police Department to report concerns that may threaten school or public safety. Every report will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.

To reassure parents/guardians about safety plans, our building principals will be in communication with their individual school communities before we return from February Break. Those plans are building specific taking into account the developmental levels of the students in the building. It absolutely “takes a village” to keep our children and one another safe. In a world of uncertainty, we must continue our work together to ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff.

Superintendent Search

My plan to retire this summer was announced at the School Committee meeting on Wednesday. It has been an honor to serve the students and families of Lunenburg for 21 years, 15 of those as Superintendent. After 40 years in public education I look forward to the next exciting chapter of my life. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have worked with so many of you in service to your wonderful children over these many years.

I want to make you aware that the School Committee will meet at 7:00 on Wednesday, 2/28/2018 at LMHS in the middle school collaborative space (Room #D132) to receive input about what you want. At that meeting the School Committee will also finalize an RFQ for a Superintendent’s Search Consultant. More information will be provided as this process moves forward.

Happy New Year and Welcome Back! Students, faculty, and staff returned to school after Winter Break rested, re-energized and ready to get back to work only to have that return interrupted by snow and frigid temperatures. Tomorrow we begin again.

WELCOME Crocker Elementary Students, Faculty & Staff.

As we return we welcome students, teachers and support personnel from Crocker Elementary in Fitchburg. Fitchburg is leasing classroom space at the Thomas C. Passios Building while the Crocker Elementary School is repaired. Crocker students in grades K, 1 & 2 will be transported daily to and from TCP by the Fitchburg Public Schools. Their school hours are 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. The Lunenburg school community should anticipate increased traffic in the area of TCP around Crocker’s start and dismissal times. Crocker staff will park in the gravel parking lot behind TCP or at Brooks House. All Lunenburg Public School District offices and programs located at TCP remain fully accessible. One slight change is that the Crocker Elementary School Secretary will be located in TCP’s main office and Lunenburg Special Services will continue to occupy the offices on both sides of that main office. PLEASE NOTE: you now reach Lunenburg Special Services by phone at 978-582-4100 X 302. The building remains secure with controlled access.

I want to acknowledge our central office, technology and maintenance personnel for their efforts this week assisting Fitchburg personnel. We are glad to be able to help out our neighbors and look forward to having them with us. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.

FY19 DRAFT School Calendar

In recent meetings the School Committee fine-tuned the FY19 calendar and anticipates taking a vote at the upcoming meeting on January 17, 2018. I have attached the draft for your information. Draft FY19 School Calendar.pdf Comments or questions can be sent to LPS@lunenburgonline.com.

FY19 Superintendent's Proposed Budget

I released the FY19 Superintendent’s Proposed Budget for FY19 before Winter Break. The proposed budget requests $20,883,265 for school operations. This request is 5.50% increase over the current budget. The proposed budget includes the addition of a part-time preschool teacher, a second grade teacher, a third grade teacher, and an additional teacher at grade six. This budget also includes adding a full-time assistant principal at the middle school and a part-time paraprofessional for the LMHS library. The proposed budget includes $119,000 for instructional materials needed due to updates to the curriculum frameworks. The request also includes funds to expand the high school 1-on-1 laptop initiative to include grade 9. The proposed budget is available on the main page of the District website ( www.lunenburgschools.net ), in school offices, or by calling 978-582-4100 X 211.

Final Lunenburg Building Committee Meeting

The final meeting of the Lunenburg Middle-High School Building Committee is Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in room D132 of the LMHS. I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the SBC members for the many hours they devoted to the SBC. We are very grateful for their service and for delivering an amazing educational facility on-time and under-budget. The majority of people who served on the SBC did so since the committee formed in 2012. Our thanks to: Michael Mackin, SBC Chair; Tom Alonzo, David Matthews BOS Representatives; Greg Bittner, Nathan Lockwood Planning Board Representatives; Mark Erickson, Finance Committee Representative; Colleen Shapiro, Greg Roy, Mike Barney, Brian Frank, and Richard Cohen, Citizens-at-Large

Ultimate Comes to Lunenburg

Lunenburg Pickup Ultimate Frisbee will start January 14, 2018. All levels of play are welcome, from beginners to seasoned veterans, ages 12 and up. Ultimate Frisbee (or simply “Ultimate”) is a no contact sport that is self-refereed. It is played on a field the size of a soccer field but with end zones like football. The object is to score by catching the Frisbee (the “disc”) in the end zone, by passing it up the field to your teammates. If you drop the disc or miss a catch, the other team gets the disc and they try to score. Co-ed games are planned for Sundays at 1:00 p.m. on the grass field below the turf and behind the Turkey Hill School. At least 14 players are needed to have a full 7v7 game, however as few as 8 for a 4v4 game is an option. Ultimate is supported by the Lunenburg Public Schools-Lifelong Learning Program. There is no fee. A signed waiver is required. RECREATIONAL AND VOLUNTEERS ACTIVITIES RELEASE FORM.pdf If you are interested in playing, please contact Kristan Tuttle at kristantut@gmail.com.

My best wishes to you and your families for a healthy, happy, and fulfilling 2018. Please stay safe and warm.

Goal #1 of our strategic plan is focused on social emotional learning and mental health. Each day, in every school, educators are focused upon academics and the overall well-being of students. A caring and supportive environment is important, not only for our students but for everyone in our schools and community. In addition to the joy and goodwill that is so much a part of this busy time of year, many experience stress and some may feel anxious or depressed. Mindful of these added pressures, the faculty and staff work diligently to maintain routines and focus students on learning. As I send this update with reminders of important events, I felt it a good time to remind everyone that our teachers, administrators, and counseling personnel are here to answer questions and assist you with any student concerns. I’ve also felt this good opportunity to share again the available resources from the R.O.A.R. forum earlier this fall. Helpful Resources.pdf

PLEASE NOTE: Final Day to Donate Old and Gently Used Clothing! It has been an amazing response. Thank you for supporting the Class of 2019. They will load up a very large truck at the end of the day tomorrow. The schools will no longer be able to receive donations after tomorrow.

Best wishes to you and your family for a wonderful Thanksgiving! The quote from William Arthur Ward on our digital sign prompted me to pause and reflect upon the many blessings I experience as Superintendent of the Lunenburg Public Schools. To quote Ward, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” So the day before this uniquely American holiday I want to express my thanks for the many blessing I receive each day from all of you. I am grateful for

  • The opportunity to work with your beautiful children who you entrust to us. They inspire and challenge me to bring my best self to the work each day (see congratulations & commendations below);

  • The time, support, attention, and encouragement you provide to your children, their friends and classmates;

  • The backing you give teachers, administrators, and other staff as we strive each day to meet the unique needs of every student we serve;

  • Our caring, hard-working faculty and staff. Their commitment to the students goes far beyond the classroom and instruction;

  • Our public safety officials, who put themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe;

  • All those who serve on the community boards and committees. Their service is difficult, time-consuming and too often without acknowledgment.

  • Neighbors, friends, and others whose names I don’t know but who take an active role in our community as members of youth and/or service organizations such as scouting, youth sports, adult education programs, the PTO, Turkey Hill Lion’s Club, and the Lunenburg Women’s Club.

I hope you were able to enjoy this beautiful fall day. Just a reminder that tomorrow is an early release for students due to parent-teacher conferences. Parents/guardians were provided information about how to schedule appointments in each school. If you were unable to schedule for any reason please contact your child’s teacher to make other arrangements. Student success is fortified by involved parents/guardians and a solid home-school partnership. This partnership is a core value of the Lunenburg Public Schools where strong collaboration and open communication among schools staff, students, and families develops mutual respect and trust. We are grateful to you for entrusting your children to us each day, and we value your input and support.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those who were lost Sunday evening in Las Vegas. As citizens we all experience shock and sadness in the aftermath of such a senseless act of violence. We are hearing stories of the many self-less acts and the bravery of those caught in the horrific situation. Collectively we are grateful for our first responders. That terrible event, coupled with the events of last Friday when our own police acted quickly to ensure our public safety, underscore the importance of our commitment to be prepared, be aware, and if we see something, to say something. I again want to recognize and applaud the efforts of Chief Marino and the Board of Selectmen in providing a resource officer to our schools. Officer Zrate is visiting classrooms, connecting with students, and becoming an integral part of our school community.

THANK YOU to everyone who came out to support the Field Hockey All Cancer Awareness Game last night. Proceeds from the snack shack, raffle baskets and 50/50 raffle were donated to the family of Brandon Cotoni. We’re not done yet! The Soccer Cancer Game is scheduled for October 11th. I trust everyone enjoyed their Labor Day weekend with friends and family. We had a wonderful start to the 2017-2018 school year. I am grateful to the faculty and administrators for their preparation and organization which made the initial days of school for the students positive and productive. Thanks also to all the support services from the bus drivers, to the custodians, food service, and extended day personnel who contributed to a smooth and successful opening. And a big shout out to our fabulous students who returned excited and ready to learn. It is going to be a great year ahead!

Our thoughts go out to the families in Texas impacted by hurricane Harvey and now hurricane Irma is looking to impact the south eastern United States. Thanks to all who donated to the relief effort organized by the Lunenburg Firefighters Association. Lunenburg has a strong tradition of providing help and support to people in need. There are many individuals locally who are such positive role models in this regard including our students.

Coloring for Cancer

Two of the most recent examples of individuals that are making a positive difference helping others are LHS students Emily Whitcomb and Alizah Raboin. These ladies teamed up this summer with the Lunenburg Public Library to donate more than 500 coloring books to Boston Children's Hospital. Now they are asking all of us to join them in donating art supplies to help with the project. You can donate at any of the schools or at the Lunenburg Public Library.

We are seeking your input on the five year plan being proposed as a result of that strategic visioning process.

We look forward to everyone’s return and another engaging, positive and productive year of learning. The tickets include an on field pre-game experience as well as premium parking.

The raffle tickets are $20 each or six for $100. The proceeds are for a great cause, and the winner will have a special experience. Contact either Bill or Kim Iannacci (bkiannacci@aol.com) for information about purchasing ticket(s).

Your support by purchasing tickets is greatly appreciated.

Residency Update Reminder

I want to remind parents/guardians that over the summer we are conducting residency verifications for ALL students entering 3rd, 6th, or 9th grades. Parents/guardians of students whose residency could not be verified from the property list received a communication from the school offices in July requesting specific documents. If contacted, parent/guardians are required to respond by August 16 with the appropriate proof to remain enrolled.

Sincerely,
