The following is a message from Dr. Reif:

Thank you for all your questions and comments that you have forwarded to Supt. Calmes. She has shared those with us directly as well as incorporated them into the FAQ document and I know she is replying directly to all the comments that come in. It is clear that you have given a great deal of thought to the possible consolidation of grades and have raised many valid questions/concerns. We appreciate that very much as the changes we are contemplating will impact your children.

Some key resignations and retirements have really been the driving force behind even considering this at all. If we can manage the budget deficit thru attrition rather than thru layoffs while preserving some of the educational opportunities, we are obligated to fully consider the proposal. Even with the extremely tight timelines. However, everyone needs to realize that with both scenarios, we are looking at reduced opportunities for students and increased fees.

We realize time is precious at this time of year, but we do hope that you will be able to attend the meeting on Wednesday night. And bring your friends. Given the tight timelines, the School Committee will be making a decision at this meeting on whether to consolidate the district or not.

For me personally, I am still on the fence. I can see the educational opportunities that consolidation can preserve given our budget challenges. But the questions and concerns that are arising certainly make me stop and think if the gain is worth the cost. Although I will admit that I will tend towards preserving opportunities for kids whenever I can.
