SEEKING PUBLIC INPUT ON NAMING A SCHOOL FOR GRADES 3-5

At the School Committee meeting Wednesday evening, three names were proposed for the elementary school for grades 3-5 that will open in the fall of 2016. This is the last year that Turkey Hill Middle School will utilize that school building. The policy for naming facilities begins with recommendations from the principal and school council to the Lunenburg School Committee. The primary and middle school advisory councils recently recommended the following names to the School Committee:

  • Lunenburg Elementary School

  • Turkey Hill Elementary School

  • Oak Avenue Elementary School

The School Committee opened this process for community input. Residents of Lunenburg should submit their choice in writing by 4:00 pm on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Votes may be sent electronically to lpetersen@lunenburgonline.com. Votes can also be sent to the School Committee by mail or otherwise delivered to the Superintendent’s Office, Room #12, Thomas C. Passios Building, 1025 Massachusetts Avenue, Lunenburg, MA 01462.

HAVE YOU SENT US YOUR FEEDBACK ON THE 2016-2017 SCHOOL CALENDAR?

Two calendar options (attached) are under consideration by the School Committee. The difference in the calendars is the length of the 2017 February Break. Calendar Option A includes a five day February Break. In Option B February Break is two days and adds an extra day to Winter Break on December 23 and also includes a one day break on Friday, March 17, 2017. The School Committee invites your feedback on these calendars. They will vote to establish the official calendar for 2016-2017 at their televised meeting on March 2, 2016. Please send feedback no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 via electronic mail to lpetersen@lunenburgonline.com or via by mail or otherwise delivered to the Superintendent’s Office, Room #12, Thomas C. Passios Building, 1025 Massachusetts Avenue, Lunenburg, MA 01462. 2016-2017 School Calendar Option A for Feedback 12-12-2015.pdf 2016-2017 School Calendar Option B for Feedback 12-12-2015.pdf

NEW PLAYGROUND NAMED

The Lunenburg Turkey Hill Family Lions Club continues to lead the fundraising efforts for the purchase of a community playground adjacent to the current Turkey Hill Middle School. The total cost for the new playground is $53,000 dollars. The Lions Club is within $8000 of the goal. In appreciation of the Lions Club generous efforts in providing a playground for the use of the children of Lunenburg, the School Committee voted at their meeting on January 6 that the playground be named the Jane Doyle Community Playground.

Jane Doyle was a wonderful, hardworking woman and outstanding community member until her passing in March of 2015. A lifelong resident of Lunenburg, she was a registered nurse and very active in the Turkey Hill Family Lions Club and other civic organizations. She was a strong advocate for children of all ages, especially those who were underprivileged. Jane played an instrumental part in organizing the Lunenburg Community Food Bank and was a direct contact for community members in need of assistance from the bank. Jane was also involved in community food drives and Boys and Girl Scout pancake breakfasts. She donated gift certificates to school nurses to help families in crisis and delivered baskets and gift certificates to families in need around the holidays and throughout the year. Jane was a kind and generous individual and a pillar of the community who dedicated her life to helping others.
