Superintendent's Update 11-21-14

I want to extend best wishes to students, parents/guardians, faculty, and staff for a warm and wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. Wednesday, November 26 is a half-day. Students return to school on Monday, December 1. That evening I encourage you to come join in the festivities and caroling at the Annual Tree Lighting ceremony. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. on December 1st around the gazebo on the lower common. The LHS Band will be there with holiday music and we always have a jolly special guest arrive with candy canes for all. Afterward everyone is welcome to enjoy hot chocolate and cookies at Thomas .C. Passios Elementary School. This event is sponsored by the School, Police, Fire, & DPW Departments with support from the Lunenburg Turkey Hill Lion’s Club and area businesses.

Remember that tonight anytime between 4PM and 9PM is Lunenburg PTO Night at the Barnes and Noble in Leominster. We hope you can join us for a fun evening at Barnes & Noble and help support your schools! Several Lunenburg teachers will be reading a variety of different books, including holiday stories including Mr. Sheasgreen at 4:30, Mr. Courtemanche at 5:00 Mr. Sparks at 5:30, Ms. Murray at 6:30 and Ms. Scott at 7:00. Many thanks to these dedicated Lunenburg educators for being part of this event. We hope you and your family will be able to join us for this event to support your schools!

School Committee Meeting

FY16 budget proposals from each building will be presented by the principals at the next meeting of the School Committee at 7:00 p.m. from Town Hall on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. The meeting will be televised. Once presented the budgets are posted at our website. The School Maintenance, Nursing, and Special Services proposed budgets previously presented are posted at https://sites.google.com/a/lunenburgschools.net/lps/school-committee-1/budget .

Also on the agenda will be the report from the Calendar Advisory. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. The survey results along with information about calendars from surrounding districts is attached to this update.

The School Committee will also take action on School Committee Goals. A draft of the goals are attached and also posted at the website. The Committee welcomes public feedback on these goals. Feedback may be sent via electronic mail to Ms. Petersen at lpetersen@lunenburgonline.com or to the Superintendent’s Office, 1025 Massachusetts Avenue by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3.

Congratulations Brook Hansel!

LHS Senior Brook Hansel signed a national letter of intent and accepted a track scholarship to attend UMASS-Amherst. A special signing ceremony and reception was held at LHS this past Wednesday afternoon. Brook is the daughter of Mark and Kelly Hansel.

Help Lunenburg Families in Need

Lunenburg Giftmart Committee is planning their 6th annual Giftmart. Giftmart is being held in mid-December. Donations of unwrapped gifts are displayed for folks to “shop” for their families. Last year, Giftmart helped 80-plus Lunenburg families and the hope is to help more this year. Gift collection boxes will be placed at each school. Please help by sending unwrapped, age appropriate gifts to school with your child(ren) by December 10th, or mail monetary donations to Nancy Kerylow, 12 Whitetail Crossing Lunenburg, MA 01462. All checks must be made out to GIFTMART.

Upcoming Events

  • Junior Varsity Football Saturday, November 22nd at 6 pm – Home Lunenburg vs. St. Bernard’s

  • Annual Turkey Trot Wednesday, November 26 (weather permitting - no make-up date) THMS students can get permission slips in their physical education class. The entry fee is one canned good or nonperishable food item that will be donated to the Lunenburg Food Bank. Grades 6 and 7 will be at 10:00 and Grades 4 and 5 will be at 10:50. The start and finish for both events are on the track. Spectators are welcome and should sit on the bleachers at the track.

  • Varsity football Wednesday, November 26th at 6:00 pm. AWAY Lunenburg vs. St. Bernard’s in Fitchburg.
