Employee Assistance Programs
Cafeteria Plan: Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Service Code allows for flexible spending plans (cafeteria plan). Lunenburg employees may participate in a “cafeteria plan”, which allows them to “shelter” funds in pre-tax income per calendar year to pay for anticipated medical, dental, and childcare expenses. Cafeteria Plan Advisors, Inc. (CPA) is the company that administers the current plan (participants pay a fee to CPA). Enrollment in the flexible spending plan is permitted during the open enrollment period only. A CPA representative notifies employees annually regarding the open enrollment starting and ending dates.
How does the cafeteria plan work? Participating employees first determine the amount of medical, dental, or childcare expenses anticipated for the calendar year and then complete paperwork provided by CPA, which authorizes Cafeteria Plan Advisors, Inc. and the town of Lunenburg to transfer (via payroll deductions) funds to employees’ individual flexible spending accounts (the money is deducted on a pre-tax basis). Employees submit bills or proofs of payment to CPA for payment/reimbursement.
Employees must keep in mind that any funds not used in the calendar year are forfeited; therefore, please carefully read and understand the rules before committing to this plan. Questions or more plan information and the type of expenses it covers, may be obtained by contacting a CPA representative at 1.800.544.2340.
